How to Study the Bible

Introduction

This is a 6 lesson course in How to Study the Bible. It is a simple method, easy to understand, and simple to learn. The amazing thing is that this method has been around for 160 years. It was written by one of the founders of the Restoration Movement in the 1800’s, Alexander Campbell. From the Restoration Movement came the Disciples of Christ, the Independent Christian Churches, and the Churches of Christ. Even though Campbell wrote his System of Bible Study in 1839, Campbell’s ideas are current for today. His whole system is only 3 pages long! He examines the importance of the Bible, the nature of the message, and he gives us easy rules to help us find the meaning of the passage.

In the first two lessons we look at Campbell’s view of scripture, and we examine his 7 Rules of Interpretation in detail. Then for the last 4 lessons we use his plan to examine the book of Philemon. We examine Philemon with the theme of Helping the Powerless. (Practical note: it took us two sessions to do Lesson 2)

Here is an outline of the study.

Lesson 1 – The Importance of the Bible

Lesson 2 – 7 Rules of Interpretation

Lesson 3 – Overview of Philemon

Lesson 4 – Philemon 1-7

Lesson 5 – Philemon 8-16

Lesson 6 – Philemon 17-25

I hope you enjoy this study as much as I did researching and writing it. May it help you discover new Biblical truth in the months and years ahead.
