Viewing the Greek and Hebrew Text (free fonts)

In some of these studies there are notes regarding the source Greek and Hebrew text. In many of these cases the actual Greek and Hebrew words will be displayed in Greek and Hebrew. In all of these cases the Greek and Hebrew text will be enclosed in special brackets (< Greek >) so that it will be clearly set apart from the rest of the text. In order to view these fonts in the Greek and Hebrew letter forms, you must have the fonts and you must have a browser that is capable of displaying symbol encoded fonts.

If you don't care to see the actual Greek and Hebrew words in their original letter forms then you can safely ignore the following information. The Hebrew is always shown in (a) a translation, (b) the original word in special brackets, and (c) a transliteration in italics. Only the original word (b) requires the Greek and Hebrew fonts and the latest browsers.

The required fonts for viewing the original words are free (you will need both):

•  Greek: SPIonic
•  Hebrew: SPTiberian

If you already have Greek and/or Hebrew fonts on your system but not the ones listed above you will still need to get these fonts. The reason is that these are the fonts specified in these web pages. In any case, it seems that no two Hebrew fonts are mapped the same way, thus, viewing Hebrew with a font other than the one originally used to entered the Hebrew letters would result in gibberish.

Retrieve the free fonts now (you must know what you are doing):

•  For a PC...  Greek win.gif (152 bytes) SPIonic_.ttf, SPTiberian.ttf
•  For a Mac... Greek mac.gif (124 bytes)SPIonic.sit.hqx, SPTiberian.sit.hqx
•  At: Summer Institute of Linguistics, Inc. (SIL), Non-Roman Fonts

Step-by-step instructions on downloading and installing the fonts (for new Internet users):

•  Instructions for PC Computers
•  Instructions for Macintosh Computers

The required browser for viewing symbol fonts is free:

•  Download: Microsoft Internet Explorer 4.x and later
