Ocellated Turkey

Only a few spaces left for 2008!

The Mayan turkey as some call the Ocellated, range over all or parts of the states of Yucatan, Quintana Roo, Campeche, and Tabasco in Mexico, Belize, and a large part of northern Guatemala. Presently only Campeche has a spring season for the beautiful, greenish colored turkey the natives call Pavo. While you are hunting you will have a chance to view Mayan Ruins, you will see Jaguars, Howler Monkeys, and many colorful birds.

You will be hunting in a party of four to six hunters, with one guide for each hunter. The guides, who are Mayan Indians, have excellent hearing and eye sight. They can hear the birds singing (ocellated birds don’t gobble like our birds) a lot farther than any of the hunters and can see them much better in the jungle.

The hunt is for five days and you hunt out of a jungle camp. The food and service are excellent. Jorge and his camp crews are there to please you and see that you have a good and safe hunt. Hunting parties arrive on Sunday and are picked up at the Merida airport and go to the camp that night. Hunting is Monday through Friday, with departure back to Snook Inn Friday evening. Saturday will be your travel day to Merida and back to the States. You will hunt twice a day, taking a two or three hour break for lunch and a short rest.

Hunt Cost:

Safari Hunt package cost is $3250.00, which includes: hunting license, turkey permit, use of a gun and ammo, and lodging at Snook Inn Motel on Friday night. If you want to take your own gun, which I recommend against, there is an additional cost. The camp guns are good. They are Remington 1100's. For an additional $150.00 you can hunt the Brockett Deer while you are there, if you should get your turkey early.

If you would like to hunt the Ocellated, you must make plans at least six months ahead of time and you should make reservations in May for the next year. In other words, 2008 reservations should be made NOW! I have hunted the ocellated several times and I am a World Slam holder. I can provide you with much information about hunting the Ocellated. I have been turkey hunting for 60 years and I am always ready to share my experiences with others. I hope to see you in the Yucatan Jungle for the greatest hunt of your life!
