Windows 95 Dial-Up Networking Setup
How to setup Windows 95 to dial and connect to Elite.Net.
- Step 1: Eliminating other WINSOCK.DLLs
- Click Start.
- Click Find.
- Select Files or Folders.
- Type WINSOCK.DLL in the Named Box.
- Make sure Look In is set to the C: Drive.
- Click Find Now.
- The Microsoft WINSOCK.DLL is in the \WINDOWS\ Directory. All other
WINSOCK.DLL files should be renamed to WINSOCK.OLD by clicking on the filename
and selecting Rename from the File pull-down menu.
- Make a note of each one renamed. These other WINSOCK.DLL may be required
for other services like *OL. You may name them back one by one later if
you need them to work. Just be sure they don't kill your Elite.Net connection.
Other WINSOCK.DLL can cause great problems with connecting to the Internet
through Elite.Net.
- Step 2: Making sure Dial-Up Networking is installed
- Click Start.
- Select Settings.
- Select Control Panel.
- Double-click the Add/Remove Programs Icon.
- Select the Windows Setup Tab.
- Single-click Communications, then press the Details button.
- The Dial-Up Networking item should be checked. If it isn't,
check it.
You may be prompted for your Windows95 Disks or CD-ROM. Click OK.
- Note: The following steps assumes you have the Dial-Up Networking support
installed.
- Step 3: Making sure the Dial-Up Adapter and TCP/IP Protocol are installed
- Click Start.
- Select Settings.
- Select Control Panel.
- Double-click the Network Icon.
- Verify the Dial-Up Adapter is present. If it isn't:
- Click Add.
- Double-Click Adapter.
- Scroll down the list and select Microsoft.
- Choose the Dial-Up Adapter and click OK.
You may be prompted for your Windows95 Disks or CD-ROM. Click OK.
- Verify the TCP/IP Protocol is present (make sure you only have one!).
If it isn't:
- Click Add.
- Double-Click Protocol.
- Scroll down the list and select Microsoft.
- Choose TCP/IP and click OK. You may be prompted for your
Windows95 Disks or CD-ROM. Click OK.
- Verify that 'Client for Microsoft Networks' is installed. If it isn't:
- Click Add
- Double-Click Client
- Scroll on the left to Microsoft, and double-click Client
for Microsoft Networks.
- Double Click on Client for Microsoft Networks.
- Make sure the Quick Logon is marked.
- Cliick OK
- Click on the Identification Tab.
- For the computer name, type your user name.
- For Workgroup, type Elitegroup.
- You can leave Computer Description blank or type something like
Pentium 133
- Click OK until you are asked to restart the system. After you restart,
proceed to the next step.
- Step 4: Setting up the connection
- Double-click the My Computer Icon.
- Double-click the Dial-Up Networking Icon.
- Type in EliteNet for the name of the computer you want
to connect to.
- Your modem should already be displayed. If it isn't, consult your Windows95
documentation for information on how to set up your modem for use with
Windows95.
- Click Next>.
- Type 209 in the Area Code box, then type in 357-0390
if you can call Atwater as a local call.
You are responsible to be sure it is a local call for you. We will not pay for any phone bills you get even if we gave you the number. You know where you live for sure. Here is a tool to find your modem number(s)
- Click Next>, then Finish.
- Single-click the new connection to EliteNet with the RIGHT
mouse button, and select Properties.
- In the Phone Number section, make sure the Use Country Code
and Area Code option is not checked.
- Click the Server Type Button.
- The Type of Dial-Up Server should be set to PPP: Windows95,
WindowsNT 3.5, Internet
- In the Advanced Options Section, make sure:
- Enable Software Compression should be Checked
- Log On to Network should NOT be checked
- Require Encrypted Password should NOT be Checked
- TCP/IP should be the only protocol enabled. Disable IPX
and NetBUEI.
- Click on TCP/IP Settings.
- Make sure Server Assigned IP Address is selected.
- Make sure Specify Name Server Addresses is selected.
- Put in the following DNS Server IP Addresses:
- 67.118.192.2 - Primary DNS Server
- 67.118.192.3 - Secondary DNS Server
- leave blank - both WINS Server
- Use IP Header Compression should be Checked.
- Use Default Gateway on Remote Network should be Checked.
- Click OK three times.
- Final Step: Connecting!
- Double-click the new EliteNet Icon. You will be prompted for
your username and password. Make sure that your username AND password are
both typed in (these are case sensitive!). As an option, you may check
remember password to avoid having to type in the password manually each
time you connect.
